Travel your way to Cologne

Holidays in Cologne

Cologne’s reputation as a welcoming and charming city comes mostly from the mentality and way of life: jovial, tolerant and relaxed. Situated on the banks of the Rhine, the fourth largest city in Germany has a lot to offer to its visitors.

Cologne’s skyline is dominated by the two towers of the magnificent Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom). Construction of the Cathedral started in 1248 and - according to original drawings - took more than six centuries. You can climb the 533 steps leading up to the Cathedral's South Tower platform to enjoy an impressive view across the city.

Back on the ground, fascinating museums are waiting for you. The Nazi Documentation Centre is an interactive museum on the premises of the former Gestapo prison and gives you an insight into Cologne’s history during the Third Reich – gloomy, yet fascinating and honest. The Museum Ludwig contains a stunning collection of modern art from Dalí to Warhol. After the museums, you’ve earned a break. Try a traditional Cologne brewery restaurant, where a “Köbes” (Cologne dialect for a “waiter”) will serve your Kölsch beer in a thin, cylindrical 20-cl glass called “Stange”.

The Cologne main station is located in the heart of the city centre, right next to the Cologne Cathedral. On the other side of the Rhine, you will find the train station Köln-Deutz, which is also a stop for long-distance trains. ICE and IC trains are running from Cologne to Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, Basel and Munich. Thalys high-speed trains run to Paris in only four hours, and long-distance buses stop at Leverkusen-Mitte and Köln-Süd stations.
